Starting counselling can feel like a big step, and it’s completely normal to have questions. Whether you're thinking about therapy for the first time or returning after some time away, this page is here to give you a sense of what to expect.
Below, I’ve answered some of the most common questions people ask when considering counselling with me. If there’s something you’re still unsure about, please don’t hesitate to get in touch—I’m always happy to talk things through.
Frequently asked questions
What is counselling?
Counselling is a supportive, confidential space where you can explore what’s going on for you. This can be emotionally, mentally, or relationally, with someone who is trained to listen without judgment. It’s not about advice or quick fixes, but about understanding yourself more deeply and finding ways forward that feel right for you.
What can I talk about in counselling?
Anything that feels important to you. Some people come to talk about anxiety, trauma, grief, identity, or relationships. Others come because they feel overwhelmed or stuck and aren’t even sure where to begin. Whatever you bring is welcome and will be met with compassion.
How often do sessions take place?
Sessions are usually weekly, at the same time each week, but I’m happy to discuss what suits your life and availability. Consistency helps to build trust, but I understand that flexibility is sometimes needed, especially for parents and those managing multiple responsibilities.
How long is a session?
Each session lasts 50 minutes. This gives us enough time to settle into the space, explore what’s present for you, and finish in a grounded way.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on you—some people come for a short period to work through a specific issue, while others stay longer for more in-depth exploration. We can review this together regularly to ensure it’s still working for you.
Is counselling confidential?
Yes. What you share in our sessions is kept private. The only exceptions are if there is a risk of serious harm to you or someone else, or if I am legally required to share information. I will always try to talk with you first if any concerns arise.
Do you offer online or phone sessions?
Yes, I offer both online and telephone counselling, as well as in-person sessions where available. I’ll work with you to find the format that feels most comfortable and accessible.
What does it cost?
Sessions are £50 each. I understand that finances can be a barrier, and I offer a limited number of reduced-fee slots. So please feel free to ask about availability.
